Resources

The SCPEC PoCUS Resource Library is a collaborative, open-access collection of educational materials created by PoCUS Interest Groups at medical schools across Canada. Here, you’ll find workshop guides, annual updates on events, teaching tools, and other resources designed to support medical students in developing their ultrasound skills. This library grows each year with contributions from student groups nationwide, reflecting SCPEC’s mission to foster collaboration and advance PoCUS education for all Canadian medical trainees.

The GIUSUM at Université de Montréal is dedicated to enhancing medical student education in ultrasound through interactive learning and collaboration with other institutions.

Signature Events:

  • UdeMSONO – Student Ultrasound Conference

    • Held at the Montreal Heart Institute, this conference offers lectures, workshops, and networking opportunities for medical trainees interested in point-of-care ultrasound.

  • SonoCup

The University of Alberta PoCUS Interest Group is committed to equipping medical students with foundational ultrasound skills through innovative, student-led education. We have organized and delivered several first-time initiatives tailored to learners at all stages of training.

Key Initiatives:

  • Expert Speaker Event

    • Hosted Dr. Brian Buchanan, a critical care physician and PoCUS expert, to speak on the wide-ranging clinical applications of ultrasound.

  • Custom Educational Workshops

    • Designed targeted PowerPoints and led hands-on training with Butterfly iQ devices for events including:

  • Set for Clerkship Imaging Workshop – Lymph nodes, gallbladder pathology, and the FAST exam

  • BMSA Skills Night – Introduced Black undergraduate students to ultrasound in medicine and dentistry

  • Cardiology Club Workshop – Focused on emergency cardiac PoCUS techniques

  • Pre-Clinical PoCUS Elective Development

    • Helped create a longitudinal elective featuring:

      • Asynchronous pre-learning modules

      • Open-book quizzes

      • In-person image acquisition practice

All workshops with hands-on instruction were led by our co-lead, a certified ARDMS-registered sonographer. With our new Butterfly iQ probe, we’re integrating ultrasound education into as many learning environments as possible to foster early interest and skill development in PoCUS.

The University of Calgary PoCUS Interest Group is a small but relentless grassroots effort. With no formal undergraduate PoCUS curriculum in place, we’re beginning to build momentum —connecting students with mentors, creating learning opportunities, and finding ways to put ultrasound into the hands of trainees earlier in their journey.

What we do:

  • Scan-along video nights– Small group sessions where students watch FOAMed cases together, pause to discuss anatomy, clinical relevance, and what you’d expect to see. You don’t need probes to start learning pattern recognition and interpretation.

  • Exploring simulation partnerships – Collaborating with existing sim-based teaching to highlight where PoCUS could fit into real scenarios.

  • Near-peer learning – Students teaching and learning from one another, with guidance from residents and faculty.

  • National collaboration – Learning from and participating in SCPEC, CAWM, and the broader conversation on how PoCUS can be better integrated into Canadian medical education.
